We started with breakfast at Cracker Barrel in Suwanee. We then caravanned to historic Watkinsville for the first stop on our historic tour. Parking in the downtown area, we walked to the Eagle Tavern Museum, Ashford’s Bed and Breakfast, the little Methodist church, and several of the shops. It was very hot and we went back to our cars for a little off road excursion to a covered bridge for a photo op. Next stop was Madison, Ga. We walked to a quaint little sandwich shop and had a delicious lunch ( we eat a lot )! After lunch, we had a guided tour of some historic homes in the downtown area.
The William’s treated us to a surprise visit to the Schaffers, a wonderful couple they know who live in one of restored historic houses on Main Street. The home was so unique and it was truly a “home” where this amazing couple has surrounded themselves with the things they love. Wonderful art, thousands of books, theme rooms, collectibles, and cozy areas for viewing television, enjoying the outside, reading books, etc. are amont the things they love. They opened there home to us with true southern hospitality and we were all thoroughly entertained. It was late in the afternoon, and we opted to head home and do milledgville another day. We learned so much and saw so many interesting things. It was an outstanding day that we will store as a treasured memory. many thanks to Paula and Russell for their hard work in planning this trip for us.
