Allante’ Atlanta July Event
Our plan was to meet at Piccadilly for breakfast, visit the Atlanta Zoo and have a late lunch at the world famous Varsity. We did have a long fun filled breakfast at Piccadilly, and enjoyed the parking lot car discussion that always follows breakfast. We had a “special” car to discuss this time. Doug drove Anna May’s new XLR and after admiring the engine, we had a demonstration of the convertible top….Very smooth.
It was decided that HOTLANTA was too hot for the zoo. Kennesaw Georgia is only a few miles from our breakfast meeting place. It is home to one of the most famous locomotives in the world, THE GENERAL of Civil War fame. The locomotive is the last stop on the tour of the 45,000 square foot museum.
We decided to visit the museum instead of going to the zoo. What a pleasant surprise! Beyond the fact that it was air conditioned, it houses many informative and amazing displays. There is a brief movie (30 minutes) that re-enacts the Great Locomotive Chase from Atlanta to almost Chattanooga. After viewing the movie, we saw THE GENERAL in living sparkling color. It was restored and went on tour around the United States until 1972, when it came home to rest and be visited in Kennesaw.
After touring the museum and sharing many of our personal “Southern Stories”, we went to lunch down the street at the Trackside Café. This little restaurant right beside the railroad tracks as promised proved to be another delightful surprise. The food was excellent and the walls were decorated with fantastic railroad themed photography. We agreed we must eat here again.
We changed our plan and still had an awesome day! Are we flexible or What? I think we are just experts at having a great time when we tour in our Allantes, Any Time, Any Where, hmmm might be a good club motto in there. See you next month when we travel North for the CLC National Meet.
