ALLANTE’ JUNE EVENT
CHARLESTON WEEKEND
We met at Middleton Plantation just outside Charleston on Friday morning. We spent the morning touring and photographing the many animals, flowers, water sights and gardens at the plantation. The onsite restaurant served us a wonderful lunch with some local favorites like hoppin’ john. After lunch, the weather turned stormy and we left for our downtown hotel. Check out the website for pictures of the parking lot where flooding occurred due to the swiftness and amount of rain. Fortunately our Allantes’ were parked on high ground.
Being the resilient group that we are, we changed our dinner plans because transportation downtown was frenetic. We walked to the nearby Marriott and had a wonderful dinner and drinks at their restaurant.
At our breakfast meeting on Saturday morning, we planned our activities for the day starting with an open carriage tour of the historic area. It is quite fascinating to hear some of the stories behind the old houses, churches and streets. We found the stories of the dueling alleys particularly fascinating. After our carriage tour, we checked out the market watching the women weaving the fascinating sea grass baskets. They are art and have become very expensive. If you have one, hang on to it! Lunch was at Tommy Condon’s, an Irish Pub. It was cool and inviting as the heat had become very muggy. After lunch, some continued to explore the downtown area and some escaped the heat and did a driving tour. Once again the afternoon brought rain but by the time we were ready to head out to our special dinner at Cypress, the sun was shining and so were our spirits. We were all looking forward to this dining experience and we were not disappointed. The food was fantastic and we enjoyed it along with wonderful fellowship. Each outing, we get to know and love each other a little more.
Sunday morning breakfast is always fun talking about what we have done and getting excited about the next event and finalizing the plans for another adventure. Some stayed for the harbor tour, some went back downtown for photo ops and some headed home.
We all agreed, neither heat, storms, or high waters can keep this group from having a marvelous time together. Looking forward to seeing everyone on the next road trip if not before.
