May 14-16 Savannah Trip
Friday morning, a group of us met at Truett’s Café which has a very nostalgic décor and delicious food ( Truett as in Truett Cathy founder of Chik-fil-A) for breakfast. The Vopelaks, Penfields and Boyland headed on to Savannah. The Neidigs joined us for lunch at Carey Hilliards before we checked in at the Hyatt on the Bay Street. Later in the afternoon, we explored River Street taking in the Waving Girl Statue, the river with the ships and barges, the retail shops and historic buildings. There is a terrific view of the beautiful Talmadge Bridge that connects Savannah to South Carolina. River Street offers a lot of great photo opportunities.
We dined at Vic’s on the River which is located in a building that was designed by John Norris who also designed the famous Mercer House from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The building was completed in 1859 and used by Sherman’s soldiers for housing and planning space. The dining room showcases a map that was hand drawn by Union soldiers detailing Sherman’s march from Tennessee to Georgia. The best part of Vic’s on the River is the history, the lady singer/piano player dressed in period attire with lots of ‘bling”, and the crawfish appetizers. After dinner we took a peek at Rocks on the Roof Lounge atop the Bohemian Hotel which is the “in place”. We decided it was the in place for a much younger crowd!
Saturday morning, we had breakfast at Clary’s Café which is also featured in the movie and book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. This is a very popular place for the locals and tourists. Come hungry because the portions are HUGE! It is a really fun place with lots of local color.
Fort Pulaski located on Cockspur Island was the next stop on the tour. It is in a beautiful area with great views from the top of the fort and it abounds with Civil War history. We were fortunate that our visit was on a day when a group in Union soldier uniforms did a re-enactment of the firing of one of the old cannons. It was very interesting and a great photo opportunity if you were really quick with the shutter.
We drove to Tybee Island which has obviously become a popular beach attraction because we couldn’t find a parking place anywhere. We did tour the Tybee Lighthouse which is another fantastic subject for photos.
Next stop, the Crab Shack! It is a great place if you can find it. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch in a wonderful outdoor dining area with a nice breeze coming in from the waterfront. The food was delicious and the Neidigs had their first taste of Brunswick Stew! From their reaction, I think they will definitely have it again.
It was perfect top down weather as we cruised back to Savannah for a tour of the historic district on the Old Town Trolley. There is so much history and gorgeous architecture in Savannah that you can’t possibly see it all in two days. The temperature soared in the afternoon and we headed to ye old ice cream parlor in the City Market. We were pretty tired from the touring and took a couple of hours to relax before dinner.
IL PASTICCIO in downtown Savannah and a short walk from the hotel was our choice for dinner. It was the best food and service we had while in Savannah. We highly recommend it when you visit Savannah. It was prom night and there were several wedding parties in town so it was great fun people watching.
Being the ever adventurous sort and having a bachelor among us, we went to SMILES, home of the dueling pianos saloon. Two guys play all request numbers and while it is very crowded, it is also large enough to accommodate a big crowd. The music was great fun and if we had all been about twenty years younger, it would have been a much later night!
Sunday morning, we met for breakfast at Huey’s on River Street ( another must visit). We shared a plate of their beignets and they were so good! The rest of the breakfast was good but they were the highlight for sure. Well, it was time to head home and it came much too soon. We were very busy and had a TERRIFIC TIME but there was so much more to do and see……I’m thinking another Savannah trip in the club’s future!
