Warm Springs and Little White House
We had perfect weather for our April 17th event. Our first stop was breakfast at the Cracker Barrel in Union City. After breakfast most of the group travelled to Warm Springs, Ga. to tour Franklin Roosevelt’s “Little White House”. The tour started with an informative video of President Roosevelt’s visits and time spent in Warm Springs. He was in Warm Springs when he died and we saw the streets lined with mourners as the train took him back to Washington D.C. We toured the house which is furnished with the authentic furnishings and accessories. It is a very comfortable home but not at all lavish.
He came to Warm Springs for therapeutic treatments of his polio and influenced others with polio to visit the pools filled with water from the warm springs. We also visited the treatment pools which are now filled twice a year (Memorial Day and Labor Day) for visitors to swim and experience the naturally warm spring waters. We saw two of his cars which were outfitted with a hand control that he invented giving him the ability to drive.
Lunch was at the Bulloch House which offered a buffet of Southern delights including fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, homemade pecan pie, banana pudding and much more.
After lunch, part of the group visited Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge which was built in 1840. It is the oldest and longest wooden covered bridge in Georgia. Not only does your membership in our club afford you lots of fun with great friends and great food, it provides a continuing education as we discover and explore new areas.
Until next time, keep on cruising with the top down!
